Relationships fail for one reason and that is partners expectations not being known before commitment to the partnership is made.

We all come into relationships with hopes and dreams of what our experience will be like. Each hope and dream represents an expectation about how you will interact, what you will do for your partner and what they will do for you.  Yet, in the courting stage, though we may share what we didn't like about previous relationships we rarely share clearly what we want.

Truth be known, most of us weren't raised to know or give voice to our expectations.  We were raised to mind read and get hints as to what behavior of ours would be acceptable to the person we needed or wanted to be in relationship with.  If we had any dreams or hopes, they often are forgotten.  Overtime,  as one after another of our expectations are dashed, we grow to be resentful - distance happens.  We find how to get our expectations met outside of the relationship and 50% of the time we choose to end a relationship and move on to another.  

Yet,notice - we get resentful over our own behavior - we didn't let our partner know what our expectations were! What you don't know -you can't do!  This is the relationship sabotage process that far too many of us experience.
